Another Chapter 11 and the Decline Of The US Auto Industry

Today, I am reading yet another article about the threat of bankruptcy at Delphi. I have also been reading all the articles, and blog posts about whose fault it is. Is it management, is it the unions or is it the policies of our government? But I think these are the wrong questions.

We live in a time when workers in China can do the same job American autoworkers do for less than $1.00 an hour. Are the Chinese workers being taken advantage of, Is this fair? Again these are the wrong questions.

I think the real question is what are Americans going to do about it. So far the response has been every man for himself. We close down plant after plant or we outsource work. This is a foolish no win game. To me the better response would be to stand together - management, union and government. Yes - Americans are going to lose jobs but are we retraining workers for new industries, are we providing healthcare so US companies will be more competitive, are we passing laws to support and grow the middle class.

I want my children to grow up in a country where people care about each other and work for the common good. That will only happen if we work together. So - what are you going to do about it?

  • It is a sad day when American auto workers can't afford to purchase the vehicles they manufacture. How is anyone supposed to support a family on $10 an hour in 2005?

We better wake up or we will lose the middle class in America.

  • It is a sad commentary on the state of American politics that major corporations such as Delphi are allowed, some may say encouraged to file Chapter 11 as an alternative way to break Union power and stiff retirees out of pensions and healt care coverage, while everyday Americans will soon lose the ability to avoid excessive debts (in many cases brought on by these corporate moves and the lack of health care) by filing personal bankruptsy. Where is the justice?
