Obscenity in Ann Arbor
I recently discovered a very interesting commentary by Dr. Fornbush at Bring It On!. In this writing he describes the purpose of "Bring It On!" by discussing how the movie "Deep Throat" led to a strong backlash from government censors. While the crackdown on graphic sex led directly to our current movie rating system, violence has become ever more pervasive and accepted in movies, with scant political criticism. It is as if violence has become the officially sanctioned substitute for sex. [more]
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of taking my family to the annual Ann Arbor Street Art Fair. It was a beautiful evening and we had a wonderful time.
However, one "gentleman" delivered a moment of darkness on an otherwise enjoyable evening. A so-called "right to life" fanatic was marching up and down the fair holding aloft a massive banner full of extremely disturbing images of aborted fetuses and dismembered baby body parts.
I have two young children, and I take my parental responsibilities seriously. Therefore, my first reaction was to confront this fanatic and inform him that there are several young children in the crowd. How dare he inflict trauma on these young people by forcing them to view such obscene images. I quickly decided against this course of action. Had I done so, there is little doubt my children would have seen the banner.
Fortunately, I saw him coming ahead of time and was able to alert my wife and distract my children by turning into the nearest artist's booth. The reaction of the crowd was interesting. A silence descended and an almost palpable chill followed this abomination.
I have also witnessed panel trucks displaying these obscene images driving around outside Michigan Stadium before U of M football games. On one of these festive occassions my five year old daughter was with me. Once again, she was able to avoid seeing this due to the crowd and her short stature. I am glad I was not carrying her on my shoulders at the time.
So, just what is considered obscenity in America today? Why do our political "leaders" go ballistic when Janet Jackson exposes her breast for a split second during a Super Bowl halftime show, while they allow grotesque and obscenely violent images to be displayed in front of children in the name of religious freedom and freedom of expression?

That's easy...
In a world where we murder millions of babies a year...
Murder and depictions of murder are commonplace.
Life is no longer sacred
In a disposable world...we have become disposable

What spin. What the idiotic FCC does in regards to what's shown on TV is irrelevant to your point, demonizing an anti-abortion protester using his 1st Amendment rights.
Which part of the Constitution do you say you support?

cal trask,
My comment was not directed at you, but at the original post.
REB and the others who post here (and comment at Conyers' blog) love to talk about how they love and support the Constitution. Then they put out drivel like the original post and whine about someone using their 1st Amendment rights to protest abortion.

I do not believe this is a question of Constituional Rights or Freedom of Expression. I believe it is a question of balance and priorities.
Why do images of nudity and sex need to be covered up in public, while other people are allowed to display huge banners of bloody aborted fetuses on one side and dismembered baby body parts on the other? Dr. Fornbush is asking the same question about sex and violence. (found at the "more" link in this post. Just what is obscenity?
I know of people who have criminal records for simply urinated in public. This is officially known as indicent exposure. Well, I think it is time to tip the scales of justice a bit more into balance.
I believe if this guy has the right to impose his twisted view of reality on other people including children, the rest of us have the right to moon anyone, anyplace, anytime!
BTW - Steve, If you have been banned from Conyers Blog come over to Bring It On! at TeamBio.org Your side really needs some help over there.

If I remember correctly, and I do, there was a protest march in San Francisco that had a bunch of anti-something (leftists) women who went topless. I saw photos of the march and it wasn't pretty (Janet Jackson would have been a 1000% improvement, except for one or two hotties); in fact, most of the topless women were horrible to look at (yes, I scrolled quickly through the pictures). Nobody was arrested. So your statement regarding what's shown on TV and what is shown locally is apples and oranges.
Thanks for the invitation over at TeamBio.org. Let me know if there's anything I need to do to become a contributor.

Before I got banned at Conyers' blog, I made the assertion that Cindy Sheehan is anti-Semitic. I still believe that considering I've read some of her posts (on her blog and in news reports). I was vilified for it. Dress it up in flowery phrases like "pro-peace" or "anti-Zionist", Sheehan is anti-Semitic. Supporting her, as John Conyers does, reveals much, especially when considering his voting record against Israel.

Steve,
I'm sure you have been banned far more than I. But, I know I was banned from Harry Reid's blog at least six times. This was before Harry closed off his community similair to ConyersBlog controls. At the time, they had a crude way of blocking commentors. They blocked the IP Address. Since I have DSL service I got around this little inconvenience by rebooting my router and getting a different IP from my ISP served up by DHCP. Now wasn't that poetic:)
Our unique relationship with Israel stirs up some very strong emotions. I have not been one to bring up our relations with Israel on too many occassions. I am conflicted area. While on the one hand, Israel is a democracy and it has an active peace movement. On the other hand, it is also militaristic and inflicts substantial damage on innocent civilians.
This is also how I feel about America. However, in America's case I feel it is my right and duty to speak up about how I feel.
BTW - No special things to do at TeamBio.org You do need to register, but I have not heard of anyone being banned, and I have seen some very ignorant posts.

The TV vs. local displays is not the question. I strongly argue that viewing a sagging breast is not as traumatic for a child as viewing a dismembered babies bodies.
Let me be clear, I am talking about feet cut off at the ankles and arms cut off below the shoulder. This is not even a representation of abortion. It is violent pornography.

Back to my banning from Harry Reid's blog for a moment. It was never explained to me why I was banned, but I noticed corelation between my bringing up the question of whether or not Communist China will be the next Super Power that I found myself inconvenienced again.
I'm sure the easy work around to the IP blocking software lead to Give 'em Hell Harry to go to a registered blogger regime.

Thank you so much to bring that up.
Here in Ottawa, Canada we had this booth @ Canada Day on the first of July in Ottawa. That showed animals being tortured and experiments being performed on them!
Dam I go to drinking beer like a real Canadian on his Birthday and I see these guys giving out flyers etc...
Very sad... I mean make a trade show of this but hey leave Canada Day alone.
Cheers Folks
