Solar Power Grows in Europe
"I was going to write to you about the world's largest existing solar power plant at Bavaria Solarpark in Muehlhausen, Germany when I came across this on the internet:LISBON (AP)--GE Energy, PowerLight Corp. and Catavento energy companies Tuesday began building the world's largest solar power plant.
The 11-megawatt solar power plant, comprising 52,000 photovoltaic modules, is being built in one of Europe's sunniest areas in Serpa, 200 kilometers southeast of Lisbon. The EUR61 million plant is expected to be completed by January 2007.
With over 350,000 solar panels installed in some 10,000 structures spread across 114 hectares, the Serpa plant will have a 62-megawatt capacity, six times more than the present largest solar plant, in Germany.
It will produce enough electricity to supply 8,000 homes and save more than 30,000 metric tons in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to fossil fuels.
I recently heard (on PBS?) that President Carter had solar panels installed on the White House roof during the energy crisis in the 1970s but Reagan had them torn out when he was in office. Great message for our citizens."

Another point of possible interest is that solar panels are installed on many barn roofs throughout Germany. The electricity generated is sold to the power company. The government provides very generous subsidies for this program.
Our nephew, an Electrical Engineer, leased the barn roof from a farmer and installed solar panels on it. He claims it's a real money maker for him. Of course it is not the most economical way to provide electrical power but it is green...and some people may get rich in the process.

Hey - makes me proud to be part Portuguese!
That Reagan/Carter story is true, from what I remember. Reagan was a lowlife.
