Our Planet is Under Attack

The debate is over. Scientists and climatologists are in agreement. The world is heating up and polar ice is melting faster than any had anticipated. What does this mean to us and our children? We can expect more damaging storms, floods, and devastation. Look out if you live in a coastal community. Current estimates project sea levels could rise up to 20 ft by the year 2100! (see link to article in title)

So, what do our current crop of political leaders in Washington DC do about this real threat to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? They fight against the real science with so-called experts who argue for more study, while sucking up to their campaign contributors. Chris Mooney has documented this accelerating assault on real science in The Republican War on Science. Meanwhile, most Democrats (with a few exceptions) remain mute on the subject. Who will stand up and fight for the future of our planet?

We the people need to wake up and let these politicians know they can no longer afford to avoid global warming. This problem is not going away and it is only getting worse! If America is going to lead the world in the 21st century, we need to get busy right now figuring out alternative ways to power our life-styles that don't involve melting the planet and flooding our coasts. If we don't some other country or countries will leave us behind.

What ever happened to the Teddy Roosevelt Republicans? Theodore Roosevelt was a true conservative. "To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days or our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed." Now those are words we should all live by.

Georgetown Students Challenge Alberto Gonzalez

I have not heard mention of the following story in the media and only a passing mention of the Gonzalez appearance at Georgetown through a Google search. If accurate, this account should encourage all defenders of liberty.

"The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous." - Frederick Douglas (on the 23rd anniversary of emancipation)

Subject: welcome Mr. Gonzales

Alberto Gonzales spoke before law students at Georgetown, justifying illegal, unauthorized surveillance of US citizens, but during the course of his speech the students in class did something pretty ballsy and brave. They got up from their seats and turned their backs to him.

To make matters worse for Gonzales, additional students came into the room, wearing black cowls and carrying a simple banner, written on a sheet. The banner quoted Benjamin Franklin, "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither."

Fortunately for him (Gonzalez), it was a brief speech... followed by a panel discussion that basically ripped his argument in half.

And, as one of the people on the panel said,"When you're a law student, they tell you that if you can't argue the law, argue the facts. They also tell you if you can't argue the facts, argue the law. If you can't argue either, apparently, the solution is to go on a public relations offensive and make it a political issue... to say over and over again "it's lawful", and to think that the American people will somehow come to believe this if we say it often enough.

In light of this, I'm proud of the very civil civil disobedience that was shown here today." - David Cole, Georgetown University Law Professor
