re: Support Our Troops - Get Them Counseling!
You know REB, not only do military men and women need mental health counseling, they need to be screened for depleted uranium exposure, and they need to be tracked for years on that, even if they show negative now.The difference between a veteran and a combat veteran must be acknowledged by the people of this country and the administration in many terms. Any veteran can tell you; these two vets are not at all the same.
Veterans who do not see combat are little different from anyone else in the general population in terms of their health care needs, physically and mentally combat veterans are very different.
It is time for "We the People" to wake up, and give our combat veterans the care they need. It is time to demand the administration of this country and the VA truly support our troops.
This administration planned for less than 3000 wounded veterans from this war. There are now well over 20,000 of them. There are poly trauma centers trying to deal with injuries that are astronomical in medical scope.

It is imperative that the people of this nation stand up and demand that the yellow ribbon, flag waving patriots of this country learn what people of any other mental health professional can tell them.... combat veterans are expensive in every possible permutation of that word. We need to learn to bear the real cost of them – our brothers and our sisters - because we allowed them to be sent where no one should ever have to go, unless we are in true danger....

I agree with you. I spent 4 tours of Vietnam only to return to a confused Nation who preceived us Veterans as the bad guys. I can see and hear the Combat Veterans in the San Diego area and history will repeat itself. One State has just passed into law that anti war protestors must stay 500 feet away from the grave site of an American who just paid the ultamite price for freedom. In San Diego, we depend on the Combat Veterans (mostly on cycles) to stand between the anti war movement and the grieving families.
The politics seem to be extreme with everyone trying not to be held at fault. Please remember what we Combat Veterans learned after Vietnam. Somewhere between 3-5 Million South Vietnamese were killed after the war. Many are still in forced labor camps. In Iraq I think the majority of the population is under the age of 18. Who ever is blowing up all these people have forgotten about the Children.
For it will be the Children that will lead the next Generation on what I call SpaceShipEarth!

my husband is an iraq combat vet. and i am a national anti war activist. no grieving family requires protection from me, nor from my tribe of fellow national anti war activists. we have no beef with any of our troops. i work hand in hand with iraq vets against the war- and i refute your stance that any military family has anything to fear from us, but the truth.
it can be hard to learn or accept that your loved one has died for the lies of rich white men who are stuffing their pockets with money they haven't earned, paid for with the blood of our troops, misused. it isn't my job to make them understand that truth, i am here only to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.
we have a big beef with the government who sent these troops to war on a lie, without adequate body armor, a plan to get out or win, so that we could become more insecure over here, lose basic freedoms, and watch our government use the constitution for toilet paper.
here in montana, we depended on combat veterans and anti war activists both- to protect our senator baucus and family from right wing fruit cakes who came to the funeral of his nephew killed in iraq- because those protesters wanted to stand on american flags and claim that the army, and the war in iraq are responsible for homosexual behaviors. what my 4 uncles who were vietnam combat veterans learned was that the VA didn't give a shit if one of them died of agent orange related bone cancer, and that the anti-war people supported them to get the VA to pay for that care.
what they also learned was that all these years later they still wake up in tears over the death of a little vietnamese girl who died in their arms, or screaming from the nightmares of tet. one of them recently told me of a 19 year old boy, cut in half by gun fire 5 feet om front of him on hamburger hill. that boy haunts his dreams for over 30 years...for what.....?
i dispute that anyone of our troops that dies in iraq has paid the ultimate cost for freedom. i am not one more iota freer today than i was before bush invaded iraq, in fact i am less free. what they have paid the ultimate cost for is greed and i will not sit for them to do it to another of our troops.
you need to back up your statement about the south vietnamese being still in forced labor camps. i know a lot of vietnam vets who make yearly trips to vietnam and work there with the vietnamese people to make ammends for the things they did there... and they don't know about these camps. you can't just throw statements out there without support and expect that will be the definitive word on the subject.
while you aren't forgetting about the iraqi children, just remember that these children will grow up with the knowledge that american troops are responsible for the rape and pillage of their nation, the white phosphorus dropped on fallujah that burned innocent people alive, the deaths of their fathers, grandfathers, uncles and brothers, who they will regard as freedom fighters and the loss of their homes and families.
also don't forget that they will live with the results of hundreds of thousands of rounds of depleted uranium munitions exploded into radioactive dust to be blown through their nation and around the world. they will live most closely with the birth defects, the illnesses and death related to such poison, and they will remember where it came from.
and if people can lose there heads for statement such as "Let them eat cake" they should also lose them for statements such as "mission accomplished"
