The NCLEX-RN® is composed of primarily multiple-choice, four-option, text-based questions written at the application/analysis level of difficulty. These questions may include charts, tables, or graphic images. There are three components of an NCLEX-RN® exam multiple-choice question.
Exam Format The NCLEX-RN and PN exams are computerized tests, made up mostly of multiple-choice questions, plus some multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, and drag-and-drop questions.
According to the NCSBN, the national first time NCLEX-RN pass rate for US educated nurses in 2020 was 86.5% and the PN pass rate for the same period of time was 83%. The quarterly NCLEX pass rates can be found here. However, the pass rate for repeat RN test-takers was only 42.9% and for PN 35.6%.
How Many Questions Does the NCLEX-RN Have? In a normal exam year, test-takers can complete anywhere from 75 to 265 questions. The NCLEX-RN is an adaptive exam, which means it will end a student’s exam when they have: Completed 75 questions and demonstrated competence as a nurse.
Remember there are between 75 and 265 questions on the NCLEX RN so math does not make up a large percent of the questions but you still need to be prepared for them. Math questions are considered a lower level question on the NCLEX.
NCLEX Pass Rates According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, in 2017, the first-attempt NCLEX pass rate for U.S.-educated nursing students was 87%. The second-attempt pass rate for domestically-educated students taking the test was 45.56%. These results demonstrate that it is a pretty difficult test.
Ultimately, you will know if you have passed the NCLEX-RN when you are provided with official results from your state board of nursing. There aren’t any secret ways to know before you have been given those results via mail or Quick Results.
The NCLEX is computer-based, and even includes an on-screen calculator for use during the exam (neato!). It also administers questions based on Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) technology, but more on this later.
To pass the NCLEX, students should plan to spend a minimum of 1-2 months studying.
If your success is at or above the limit or dividing line, you are successful. If it is below that, you will fail. Bottom line: If you’ve passed NCLEX and been reduced to 75 questions, you’ve done a great job. If you failed with 75 questions, you really screwed it up.
Though the vast majority of candidates pass the exam the first time, those who fail are permitted to retake it after 45 days from their original test date. Candidates may retest as many as 8 times in a year. Candidates must pass NCLEX within three years from when they graduated nursing school.
In fact, the passing score on the NCLEX-RN is actually zero! According to a recent release from the NCSBN, the passing logit score for the NCLEX-RN (through 2019) is 0.00. Basically, this means that you need to be answering the medium difficulty questions correctly at least 50% of the time to pass.

No, but the NCSBN will begin beta testing in 2022. … Then, in December 2022, the NCSBN will invite nursing students who are expected to graduate in April 2023 to test out the Next Generation NCLEX; their scores will not count.
If you got LOT of SATA…you’re on safer bet. It usually means you’re on higher level questions….or statistically wise… Select all questions don’t always mean higher level.
