The True Story of the Kids Who Beat MIT’s Best Robots, Coming Soon to Theaters. … Now the story of those robot-builders has a new chapter. Spare Parts, starring George Lopez and Carlos PenaVega, opens in January, and Davis is publishing a book by the same title updating the kids’ story.
“Spare Parts”, a movie based on the true story of the Carl Hayden High School Falcon Robotics Team, follows the journey of four students who are eager to compete in a national robotics competition.
Now, one of those students, Lorenzo Santillan, is making a name for himself in another realm: cooking. He’s opened a food truck in Phoenix called “Ni de aqui, ni de alla,” which translates to “neither here nor there.” And, he’s determined to make his mark even as his status in this country remains up in the air.
Oscar Vazquez, a cavalry scout with the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, took his first steps on American soil as a child, when he and his mother illegally crossed the Mexican-American border in Douglas, Ariz.
Dr. Cameron obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1958, and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962. All of his training in General and Thoracic Surgery was obtained at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Maybe the substitute science teacher, Dr. Cameron (George Lopez), will help. He’s an unemployed engineer, a sad Latino who won’t explain his checkered job history to the principal (Jamie Lee Curtis) who interviews him for the job.
The Arizona State University and Si Se Puede Foundation all-female underwater robotics team was elated to place second overall, earning $3,800 in winnings.
Four Mexican high school students form a robotics club. With no experience, 800 bucks, used car parts and a dream, this rag tag team goes up against the country’s reigning robotics champion, MIT.
He subsequently is granted residency, and afterwards is able to finally enlist in the army as an American soldier. Oscar is the exception, not the rule, of undocumented immigrant kids who are able to find a path to legal residency.
Their robot springs a leak and the students come up with an inventive solution — placing tampons in the case holding the sensitive electronics.
Carl Hayden has received worldwide acclaim for its Robotics team, which won the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) International Chairman’s award in 2008, recognized as the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.
During his senior year, Luis takes Fredi’s Senior Science Seminar and Fredi tells him he can get credit by joining the robotics team (particularly because the kids need a little more strength on their team to help build the robot). Luis serves as the brawn of the operation, at six feet tall and 250 pounds.
Vazquez, now living with his family in Texas, said he plans to join the US Army Reserve, and said he felt he was “living the American dream.” He insisted to the Senate Judiciary Committee that other undocumented immigrants must be shown similar leniency. “Having legal status changed my life,” Vazquez said.
Oscar Vazquez, one of the four Mexican immigrant high school boys featured in the book and film Spare Parts will speak at Edgewood High School (EHS) Sunday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. in the new EHS McKinley Performing Arts Center.

Foreman resigned at the end of Season 3, feeling that the more time he spent with House, the more he became like him. … At the beginning of season 6 he was made Department Head of Diagnostic Medicine after House briefly quit but was back to being a fellow when House got his medical license reinstated.
House also causes a near-death episode at his bachelor party. However, at the end of Season 5, Chase and Cameron marry. Chase and Cameron’s marriage starts very well.
Allan Cameron became the superintendent of schools in Wrentham, Massachusetts, in 2014. Prior to that, he served as acting assistant superintendent, principal, vice principal, school counselor, teacher, and paraprofessional in school districts in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Spare Parts is a mod that gives the Sentinel a chance to drop rare items on death.
The Phoenix kids lowered Stinky into the pool for a test drive. They worked the remote controls, but the robot didn’t respond. They hauled Stinky up and saw that water had leaked into the plastic briefcase that housed its brains. The contest began the next morning, so they needed to fix the problem overnight.
Oscar recruits computer geek Cristian Arcega and Fredi presses mechanic/thief Lorenzo Santillan to join. The four kids in the group are all illegals.
The movie rights were picked up. A book-length version of the original article was released under the title “Spare Parts” last month. … Though the movie was filmed in New Mexico, the first shots were of Phoenix.

Spare Parts is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for some language and violence. – Fist-fights and arguing.
The remarkable story of the ragtag, but ultimately world-famous Falcon Robotics Team from Carl Hayden High in Phoenix unfolded in 2004. Carl Hayden was then known largely as a school where as many as 80% of the kids were living below the poverty line.
In 2004, four teenagers from an impoverished Arizona high school entered an underwater robotics contest. They had no money, and even less experience, but the robot they created, dubbed “Stinky,” went head to head with the engineering geniuses at MIT — and won.
Oceaneering, the largest ROV operator in the global oil patch, was helping Transocean and BP drill the well before the Deepwater Horizon exploded, and afterwards was instrumental in capping the runaway well.
The first half of the good-natured film introduces the Carl Hayden boys — the likable Oscar, Lorenzo, Luis and Cristian — and their teachers, allowing them to tell how Stinky (their robot) was built for the Marine Advanced Technology Education competition at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
In Spare Parts, the Carl Hayden team discovered that through imagination and creativity, they can reinvent themselves as part of a team and find solutions to complex engineering problems.

In the club, Lorenzo takes the lead on coming up with cheap, practical, and creative solutions on how to build the robot: for instance, engineering a water sampling mechanism with a balloon and a sump pump, or coming up with the idea to use tampons to soak up leaking water.
