Originally known as The Greenbrier Classic, the tournament was held in July from 2010-18 but moved to September last year and served as the season opener for the 2019-20 season. It was canceled in 2016 because of widespread flooding that impacted the area just weeks before the event was to be played.

The Greenbrier Classic will be played on Greenbrier’s first 18-hole golf course, The Old White TPC Course. The Old White was originally designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor in 1914.

Forbes estimates Justice’s net worth at $1.6 billion. Justice serves as the owner or chief executive officer of over 50 companies, including the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, which he bought for $20.5 million in 2009, preventing its bankruptcy.
Though The Greenbrier seems a tad more upscale, The Homestead is homier, but with plenty of class. To decide which is your favorite, there’s really only one thing to do: Visit both.
The closest Airport would be Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) located 10 miles form the Resort. This airport offers daily flights to and from Dulles and four flights to and from O’Hare each week. Roanoke International Airport (ROA) is located approximately an hour and a half from the Resort.
THE GREENBRIER. Even if you’re not planning a stay in the lavishly styled hotel, visitors are welcome to walk the grounds, even take a carriage ride.
The Old White, the first 18-hole golf course at The Greenbrier, was designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and opened for play in 1914. A legend of golf history at The Greenbrier, the course was named for the well known Old White Hotel, which stood on the grounds from 1858 through 1922.
Definition of forecaddie : a golf caddie who is stationed in the fairway and who indicates the position of balls on the course.
The Greenbrier has 710 rooms, including 33 suites and 96 guest and estate homes. On a weekend in the winter, hotel rooms start at $268 (plus tax) and cottages start at $408 (plus tax). The resort also has 10 lobbies, which make for cool hangouts where you can pretend you’re a founding father.
Resort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, dress slacks and walking shorts). These venues enjoy an upscale and inviting environment. If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.
One that may surprise you: White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., host of this week’s Greenbrier Classic. Since billionaire Jim Justice bought the Greenbrier in 2009, the resort has seen an uptick in its high-living community extension, the Greenbrier Sporting Club.
West Virginia does not see many pros living here, but several PGA golfers have homes here in the Mountain State. Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley all have homes at the Greenbrier.

Locals have said their Mountain State neighbors have a “strong sense of community,” and that they are “unpretentious” and “humble.” Others even said West Virginians are pretty much the “nicest people on the planet,” and even though their state pride runs deep, they’re very welcoming to outsiders.
The Greenbrier has a peculiar tipping culture. A daily fee of $26 per person per day is meant to cover gratuities for dining room servers and room housekeep- ers. Total tips disbursed in two-night stay: $13. The Greenbrier’s 800-plus rooms are individually decorated.
Amtrak offers regular train service to The Greenbrier from major cities, including Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago. Complimentary transportation is available to bring you and your luggage from the White Sulphur Springs train station to the resort.
The Greenbrier seemed to be somewhat of a mini-Hollywood type setting in the mid-20th century, with stars such as Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Bing Crosby, Liza Minnelli, and Grace Kelly roaming the halls.
Tours are approximately 90 minutes in length and are available for guests 10 years of age and older.
Well, of course, how much to tip a caddie is up to you and the level of service that you get, but you should generally tip a caddie anywhere from $20-$50 per player after the round.
While the players’ clubs are transported on motorized carts — because a single forecaddie obviously can’t be expected to carry three or four golf bags at once — the forecaddie provides most other standard walking caddie services.
A caddie is a person who is hired to carry clubs and provide other assistance for a player, which could include advice about the course, the clubs players hit for each shot and reading greens. … In other words, a forecaddie is a caddie employed by a group of golfers.
With around 1,600 workers on active status, employment figures at The Greenbrier are at a level typical for this time of year, according to Jim Justice, the resort’s owner.
